Introduction

Today, I want to share the story behind an exciting event happening this weekend: Big Up the Kidz Fun Fly 2024. This initiative aims to encourage children to dive into the incredible hobby of radio-controlled (RC) aircraft.

The Birth of an Idea

Many of you have already shown incredible support for this initiative and have asked where the idea came from. I recently caught up with Dan Hampson, who shared the story behind it.

Earlier this year, Dan and Joe were driving back from Prowing in Germany, where Joe had the privilege of flying a demo slot for Advanced Radio, a team he is sponsored by. Joe felt very fortunate to have this opportunity, knowing it’s something many enthusiasts never get to experience.

Reflecting on the opportunities and friendships this hobby has brought them, both locally and globally, Dan wanted to help others gain similar experiences. Recognising that kids are the future of the hobby, Dan thought it was crucial to inspire and support young pilots.

From Conversation to Reality

The idea sparked during a conversation about the need for more kids in the hobby. Dan realised they had a great venue, supportive facilities, and a chairman who is very pro-young pilots and their flying styles. With Joe’s sponsors and team affiliations showing enthusiastic support, the concept of a “fun fly” event started to take shape.

After discussing with the local club committee, they decided to proceed with the aim of bringing young hobbyists together to build friendships and potentially become part of teams in the future. They set a date, invited 20 junior pilots, and watched the event slowly snowball into something bigger.

Making It Happen

To ensure the event gets the coverage it deserves, RCM&E Magazine, BMFA Magazine, Aeromodeller Magazine, and myself, Matt Takhar RC, will all be promoting it. This exposure will hopefully inspire other parents to get their kids involved in this fantastic hobby.

Organising this event has been a fun and straightforward process, thanks to a great support team. Joe’s mum, Lucy, has been invaluable, contributing tirelessly behind the scenes. Gary Oliver and Simon Wood have also been instrumental in ensuring everything is in place and organizing various aspects to make the event a success.

Final Thoughts

I’ve truly enjoyed helping with this event and hope the kids have an amazing time. All we need now is great weather!

Thank you to everyone who has supported and helped make Big Up the Kidz Fun Fly 2024 possible. Let’s make this event unforgettable!

Cheers,
Matt & Dan.
