Introduction
This past weekend, the Southern Model Show was the stage for an extraordinary event that highlighted the future of the radio-controlled (RC) aircraft hobby: Big Up The Kidz. What made this event truly special was the opportunity it provided for young pilots to take the spotlight, many of whom had never flown in a show line before. The weekend was not only a fantastic learning experience but also a testament to the bright future of our hobby.
The Event: A First for Many
One of the standout features of Big Up The Kidz at Southern Model Show was the chance for young pilots to demonstrate their skills on a big stage. For many of these kids, it was their first time flying in front of an audience, and they handled the challenge with remarkable poise and confidence. Getting ten kids to fly simultaneously within a tight ten-minute slot was no small feat, but the event was executed flawlessly. The array of aircraft ranged from powerful 120cc and 60cc models to smaller electric planes, one of which even towed a banner, adding to the spectacle.
A Collective Effort: Thanking the Team
This event would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of many individuals. A special thank you goes out to Simon Potter and his team, who went above and beyond to ensure that these young pilots had a platform to shine. From the very first conversation months ago, Simon was fully committed to the idea of getting more young people involved in the hobby, and this event was a clear demonstration of that commitment. His efforts will undoubtedly lead to more pilot applications in the coming years.
A big shoutout also goes to the entire Big Up The Kidz team, including Gary Oliver, Simon Wood, and myself, Matt.Takhar.RC, for pulling together to make the event run as smoothly as it did. What seemed like a daunting task on Friday was executed seamlessly over the weekend, thanks to everyone’s collective effort. Special thanks to Lucy Cole and Ali Wood for the time and energy they invested in creating the banner, which added a professional touch to the event.
The Experience: Beyond Flying
The event was not just about flying; it was about community and fostering a love for the hobby. The excellent commentary by Martin John Painter and John Tancock played a crucial role in engaging the spectators and explaining the purpose behind Big Up The Kidz. Their words helped promote the young pilots and the importance of getting more youngsters involved in the RC aircraft hobby.
Moreover, a generous gesture by Martin Thompson, who gifted drones to all the kids after their first flight on Saturday, added an extra layer of excitement. The joy on the kids’ faces was priceless, and it’s moments like these that will stay with them for a long time.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Big Up The Kidz
As we reflect on the success of this weekend, it’s clear that Big Up The Kidz has struck a chord within the RC community. The enthusiasm and passion displayed by the young pilots have inspired many, and there’s already talk of what we can do for 2025. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many encouraging us to keep the momentum going.
We also want to acknowledge the sponsors who made this event possible: Az Aerosports, AerobatX, Advanced Radio, Futaba UK, J Perkins, RC Light Systems, RCM&E Magazine, RC3DPrint, FCT Flight Composite Tech, JH Custom Graphics, Iactiverc, Cambria Funfighters, Nexus Modelling Supplies, and BMFA Magazine. Their support is crucial in ensuring that events like Big Up The Kidz can continue to inspire the next generation of RC enthusiasts.
Conclusion
The Southern Model Show 2024 was a weekend to remember, particularly for the young pilots who took part in Big Up The Kidz. The event was a resounding success, showcasing the talent, dedication, and potential of the next generation. As we look forward to 2025, one thing is clear: the future of the RC aircraft hobby is in very good hands.
