What makes Dubai a dream destination for RC enthusiasts? After attending the Dubai National Day 2024 celebrations, I can confidently say that the flying complex here is unlike anything else in the world. From world-class facilities to the incredible hospitality of the RC community, this trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In this post, I’ll share highlights from my trip, including the state-of-the-art flying complex, the amazing models and flights I witnessed, and why this destination should be on every RC pilot’s bucket list.
The Flying Complex: A Pilot’s Paradise
Dubai’s RC flying complex isn’t just a field—it’s a purpose-built facility designed to elevate the hobby to new heights. Here’s what makes it stand out:
• Hobby Shops On-Site: Need a spare part or a new plane? The complex is home to multiple well-stocked hobby shops, like the impressive Gonzo Hobby, which carries everything from Extreme Flight models to advanced electronics.
• Hangars for Models: The site features both club hangars (free for members) and private hangars that you can rent or buy, making it incredibly convenient to store your aircraft.
• Workshops: A fully-equipped workshop lets you maintain or repair your models on-site.
• Pits Area: A shaded and spacious pits area with power outlets, vending machines, and seating ensures comfort for pilots and their models.
• Flight School: Whether you’re a beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, the complex has flight schools that encourage more people to join the hobby.
Incredible Flying and Hospitality
Over the three days I spent at the complex, I saw everything from massive jets like the MB-339 NAT to sport planes and even a few gliders. The flying talent on display was phenomenal, with pilots performing jaw-dropping aerobatics and precision landings.
The RC community in Dubai was incredibly welcoming. The hospitality extended to me by the members, including letting me fly one of their planes, was something I’ll never forget.
Facilities Designed for Pilots
Dubai’s flying complex goes beyond the basics:
• Runway: A wide and long tarmac runway with multiple starting areas caters to both jets and prop planes.
• Safety Features: Fenced-off flying zones and spectator areas ensure everyone enjoys the action safely.
• Google Maps Convenience: Located in a remote area, the complex provides a perfect, distraction-free flying environment.
My Flying Experience
For the first time, I had the chance to fly in another country. While I was nervous flying Ryan’s Extreme Flight Edge, the experience was thrilling. Despite my initial jitters, I loved every second and can’t thank Ryan enough for trusting me with his setup.
Travel Tips for RC Pilots
If you’re considering visiting Dubai for an RC event, here are some tips:
• Affordable Flights: I managed to get last-minute BA tickets for around £400, and with some planning, you could find even better deals.
• Accommodation: Black Friday deals helped me score a great hotel room, but Dubai offers options for all budgets.
• Pack Light: The complex has everything you need, from tools to spare parts, so you don’t have to carry your entire workshop with you.
The Verdict
Dubai’s RC flying complex is more than just a place to fly—it’s a hub for innovation, community, and passion for the hobby. With facilities that rival the best airfields in the world, it’s no wonder this destination is quickly becoming a must-visit for RC enthusiasts.
