New to the hobby? Want to know what a transmitter mode is? Then you have come to the right place!

Let me explain. Firstly I can’t keep typing transmitter, so let’s abbreviate that to TX. This is common in the RC world. FYI receiver is also abbreviated to RX. So we have TX and RX!

Back to the TX. There are mainly 4 modes of operation. The modes dictate what the “sticks” do. These Modes are numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4. The most common Modes are Mode 1 and Mode 2, but I’ll explain all 4 because I have OCD.

Quick note; If you’re new to the hobby then I suggest first finding a local club and asking them what Mode they fly. It will be much easier to find a tutor if you fly the same mode as them. Although having said that most modern TX’s get around this by mapping. But that just getting confusing at this stage!

Mode 1

Stick controls are as follows:

Left stick operates Elevator (move stick up/down) & Rudder (move stick left/right)
Right stick operates Throttle (move stick up/down) & Ailerons (move stick left/right)

Here’s a picture I borrowed of the inter web, a nice old Futaba TX from the 1800s (joke)

Mode 2

Stick controls are as follows:

Left stick operates Throttle (move stick up/down) & Rudder (move stick left/right)
Right stick operates Elevator (move stick up/down) & Ailerons (move stick left/right)

Mode 3

Stick controls are as follows:

Left stick operates Elevator (move stick up/down) & Ailerons (move stick left/right)
Right stick operates Throttle (move stick up/down) & Rudder (move stick left/right)

Mode 4

Stick controls are as follows:

Left stick operates Throttle (move stick up/down) & Ailerons (move stick left/right)
Right stick operates Elevator (move stick up/down) & Rudder (move stick left/right)

Conclusion

It’s really up to you what Mode you fly. It will depend on who’s teaching you to fly, possibly if you’re left or right handed. I would say Mode 2 is the most common around the world.

Just have fun flying!
